![]() ![]() PDFs can be converted to PDFs using the Acrobat Reader, which, like the Acrobat Distiller, provides an alternative way to generate PDF files. The Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free open source program, available for 32- and 64-bit operating systems, with built-in support for PDFs, image files and PDF pages. In 2013, Adobe released a plugin for Adobe Reader for the purpose of generating a PDF from an image using PNG(PNG) file extension. By saving fewer bytes per file, you reduce the amount of data that is transferred using a PNG file over the Internet. By using only the size specification of the PNG format, you keep your images in high-quality, free of file size and bandwidth limitations. ![]() By storing only 10% more data than the standard PNG format, you save money and resources, which can be used to buy other things faster or increase your productivity. After all, doing the bulk of your evaluation, you may find that your algorithm does not compress the image well and as a result, it's still not going to have much of an effect on the image quality. If, however, it's going to be a more detailed analysis of the compression artifacts, like we are doing below, we may be better off to focus on the details rather than going for maximum speed. For example, if we are going to try and optimize for speed we might as well start in the middle, using the current fastest algorithm and work from there. This is because we do not want the lossy compression we do to impact upon the image quality in any significant way, in particular because this is why PNG was developed. The next obvious step is to work on the compression itself, as opposed to just trying to compress it down, although that might also be an appealing prospect for people (and it needs to be for us too, right?). I was recently asked to examine the problems with the previous version of PNG to improve it (, see also ). ![]()
